The other day I was in my favorite firearms emporium, Vance’s Shooter’s Supply in Columbus, Ohio (www.vanceoutdoors.com), perusing the gun cases. I hadn’t paid much attention to the prices lately, and was struck by how expensive many of the handguns are, even in a store where prices are very reasonable. It’s hard to find reliable, quality defensive handguns on a restricted budget. One option is the surplus Walther P1 semi-automatic pistol imported by Century Arms International and priced around $325.

I recently purchased a Walther P1 in 9mm made in 1979 and is surplus Berlin Police issue (this circle & dot proof mark denotes Berlin Police issuance http://imgur.com/sTKXSgH). I finally took it to the range and am ready to make a basic report on it. I've seen a few military surplus P1s for sale at good prices around gun shows, but these things are sort of oddballs, so hopefully this can help people on Gunnit make an informed decision before buying one.

As I noted in a previous review, the German P38 pistol was a very well made and very popular sidearm introduced during World War II as a replacement for the old P08 Luger.
